How you choose the right business domain name? - Online Essentials

Starting your own business online can be one of the most rewarding but difficult things you will ever do.  You might be wondering what’s the best and most effective way to get started.  Last week, we talked about properly branding your business.  There is a clear difference between branding and marketing.  A company that is branded correctly sets itself up for success that transcends making a lot of money.  Your company could potentially be recognized worldwide if you practice branding correctly.  But what about a name for your website?  How will you know that you are choosing a domain that will stand out from the competition and be easy for your customers to remember?  That is the question I’m answering today in this series that focuses on the essentials to start your own business online!

Importance of a Domain Name

Choosing a domain name for your website should be as important as picking a name for your business.  It should be a thoughtful process.  You should take many things in consideration.  Your domain name is your identity on the web; you want to make sure you choose a name that not only fits your business, but is also easy to find and promote.  Your website is the face of your business online so you must deem these details important.  The following are some key points to consider while choosing a domain name for your website:

Easy Domain

Finding a domain name that’s easy and simple is critical to online success. If you use slang (u instead of you) or words with multiple spellings (express vs. xpress), it might be harder for customers to find your site.  Choose something that is familiar for the person that is typing the name of your website so that it is easy to access the first time.  One of the worst things that could happen is that a customer does not find your website but ends up finding your competitor’s instead.  Big no no.

Using Keywords within the Domain

Try using keywords that describe your business and the services you offer. For example, if you’re a window replacement business, you may want to register WindowRepair.com or WindowReplacement.com.  You should do this because the keywords will be aligned with the search terms your customers are using.  Your domain will help them find what they are looking for faster by giving them an obvious clue.  Having keywords related to your business within the domain will also help your SEO (Search Engine Optimization).  Google and other popular search engines will tag your business as a valuable source for people about your industry.  Your domain name will only enhance it.

Pick a Memorable Domain Name

There are millions of registered domain names, so having a domain that’s catchy and memorable is essential.  Once you’ve come up with a name, share it with close friends to make sure it sounds appealing and makes sense to others.  One thing to remember is that shorter can be better but not at the expense of confusing the user.  Using numbers and hyphens to shorten a domain name sounds appealing, but it could end up being misunderstood.  Get creative while picking your domain name.  A thoughtful domain that is catchy and memorable can probably get away with a bit of a longer name.  I tend to pick domain names for my clients that only include two syllables because it’s easy for everyone to remember.

Choose the right Domain Extension

Extensions are suffixes, such as .com or .net, at the end of a web address.  These can have specific uses, so make sure to choose one that works for your business.  The .com domain extension is far and away the most popular, but it can be tough to get a short and memorable .com domain name because it’s been around for so long.  If you are running a non-profit, then a .org domain name might be the right thing for you.  Domain extensions have expanded over the past few years.  You might be brave enough to get a .ninja or a .guru domain name.  I’ll let you make that decision for your business, but consider the many other extensions available by visiting a website like Godaddy.

Act Fast and Choose your Domain Name Today

Domain names sell quickly.  Thankfully, they’re also inexpensive, so register your favorite domain names as soon as possible.  Most domain names only require an average of $10 a year on registration and fees.  If you’re having trouble finding an available name, domain registrars like GoDaddy, BlueHost, or Midphase will suggest alternate names during your domain search to help you find the perfect domain name.
